It’s the last day of summer break and a young girl is determined to enjoy every last minute. But dangers lurk within the shadows and jeopardize the innocence of her childhood. Facing the harsh realities of the real world, she is now desperate to return to the place she once couldn’t wait to leave…home.
Summer is an energetic, precocious 8-year-old who loves to have fun and eat junk food. The scene is set in the late seventies in Atlanta, Georgia during a time when the Black community was seized by the threat of an unknown serial killer. The lifeless bodies of missing young boys were being discovered in random places around the city. Concerned for her son’s safety Summers’ mom decides to send her brother Michael away to Savannah to stay with his Grandmother until they catch the killer. However, she takes for granted that Summer was safe, because the only victims had been boys. But, a killer is only part of the danger that threatens a young and naïve little girl.
Summer is an enduring short story that will take you on a journey into the world of a young girl and a day that will leave her forever changed.
